How to Make MINT SIMPLE SYRUP


Simple Syrup, as you would expect is SIMPLE to make.  A flavored Simple Syrup (like this Mint version) is just as simple.

You pretty much can not (and definitely Should Not) make real Southern Sweet Tea without making simple syrup.  No self respecting true Lady of the South would not know another way of making the House Wine of the South without Simple Syrup as the sweetener for their Iced Tea.

And just about any recipe that calls for Simple Syrup would be improved with the tiny hint of Mint that this version adds.  But don't think you need to stop at mint.  You can easily adapt this recipe for making a Raspberry Simple Syrup, or almost anything else... Mango, Pineapple, Blackberries, Ginger, Lemon.... Almost anything you can think of.

If you make a batch to use right away, all you need is equal parts of sugar and water and a few mint sprigs.

BUT... this is perfect to "Can".  It does take a little attention, the syrup needs to be stirred over heat while the sugar melts into the mix.  But it is just as easy to make a gallon as it is to make a cup.  The syrup will stay fresh in a canning jar for up to 6 months.  Only extra tip is to add a small drizzle (about a tsp) of Vodka to each jar.  I put mine up in pint (2 cup) jars which is the perfect size for making my recipe for Sweet Tea.


OK... Here's what I did...


Mint Simple Syrup


Ingredients
  • 1 Part (like 2 cups, 4 Cups, etc) Water
  • 1 Part (like 2 cups, 4 Cups, etc) Sugar
  • 1 Sprigs of Fresh Picked Mint, several leaves on each sprig per Cup of water/Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vodka per Pint Jar if storing for up to 6 months.
Cooking Directions
  1. Bring the water to a boil.
  2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water and add the mint sprigs to the water, stirring constantly.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat. (SPECIAL NOTE: Do not allow the syrup to boil for too long or the syrup will be too thick.)
  4. Allow to cool completely and thicken. At the same time the mint will be steeping, think making mint tea.
  5. Once the syrup has cooled and thickens, strain out the mint, Seal in canning jars with a tsp of Vodka in each to help preserve.
  6. Will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
  7. Serve with Iced tea, Lemonade, or many Mixed drinks (Mojito, Daiquiris, Hurricanes, Etc.) And ENJOY!

Or how about Roasting Garlic for a spread on toast points for a unique appetizer. Infusing Oil with Herbs or spices or spicy peppers. Or how about making your own BBQ sauce. Nothing sets you apart as a grill master like setting out a jar of your own specialty BBQ Sauce.

You get the idea. These recipes are very simple, take very little time but will set you apart as a better cook...
